Hurghada is a huge town located in Southern Egypt, its coastline running alongside the Red Sea, with plenty of things to do to suit everybody. It has grown in size and popularity since the 1980s, beginning as a small fishing village and becoming the vast holiday resort town that it is today. There are several ancient shipwrecks you can explore for yourself once you're all kitted out in your scuba gear, such as the Egyptian military vessel the El Minya which was sunk by Israeli warplanes in 1969. It doesn't end with shipwrecks, though, as there is a vast array of marine life to observe in the depths including turtles, dolphins, emperor angelfish, morays, and sharks. If you prefer dry land, however, you'll be pleased to hear that there are plenty of beautiful, unspoiled beaches to enjoy too.
Al Daher is the old town of Hurghada, and here you'll find plenty of traditional charm - there's an Egyptian bazaar to explore and plenty of shops selling local souvenirs. There's great travel links to the rest of Egypt here too, as it's where over half of the population live. This region also has the best value hotels and plenty of local cuisine. Sigala is just under a mile away, and it's a great place to escape all the tourism and really experience what life is like in Egypt. Enjoy some of the cuisine and engage with the locals, and you can really begin to enjoy Southern Egypt.
Two miles from the centre of Hurghada is El Gouna, which is also known as the Venice of Egypt. Made up of islands connected by bridges, this beautiful area is home to many top hotels. With plenty of shopping and some expensive restaurants on offer, this region can quickly drain your wallet - but it's definitely worth checking out what's on offer here, such as golf, boat trips and water sports.
If you fancy some more snorkelling and diving, then head 35km out of Hurghada to Makadi Bay. This is one of the most popular spots in the area for beach holidays, and it's not hard to see why. With a huge stretch of sandy beach, it's the perfect location to soak up the sun - or head out into the water. From here you can also find excursions to the nearby ancient town of Luxor, and of course there is the benefit of being so close to Hurghada too.
