Great Activities Every Guest Must Do While Visiting La Jolla

By Terry Hunefeld

San Diego is often called America's finest city - and La Jolla is the gem of San Diego - a beautiful community situated along San Diego's Pacific Coast. People flock to La Jolla, captivated by its trendy boutique-lined streets gemmed with art, clothing, jewelry, gifts and other shopping destinations. Indulgent soft sand beaches, amazing weather, laid back people and an abundance of activities make La Jolla a visitor's paradise. Here are five activities that should not be missed.

Originally designed as a safe place for children to wade, Children's Pool is a man-made pool-into-the-ocean that one was a children's beach but is now a famous haven for wild Harbor Seals. Visitors enjoy venturing out along a cement walkway over the water to watch the seals and their youngsters lounging, playing and slipping away into the ocean. Nearby, you will find the beautiful La Jolla Cove bathing beach and tide pools.

La Jolla is home to one of the most spectacular waterfronts in Southern California, complete with remarkable caves, rugged sandstone cliffs, soft sandy beaches and picturesque sunsets. La Jolla Cove is a protected marine sanctuary with an idyllic crescent of sandy beach sheltered from the ocean waves. The Cove is a wonderful place for swimming, snorkeling or just people watching. Continuing south you'll pass through the grassy Scripps Park- a staging area for family picnics, Fourth of July fireworks and free summer concerts.

A visit to The Cave Store affords visitors the opportunity to descend a 100 year old stairway, into a manmade tunnel, down into the fascinating and mysterious Sunny Jim Cave - the largest of several ocean caves in La Jolla Cove. The cave's first owner, Sunny Jim, hired two Chinese laborers in the early 1900's to dig this underground tunnel down to the cave. Using only picks and shovels, they carried all the dirt out by hand. In the 1910's, the only way the public could get to the cave was by lowering themselves down a rope. Today, you can take 145 stairs from The Cave Store. Sunny Jim Cave is the only sea cave in California that you can enter from a stairway.

Mount Soledad has the best drive-up views of San Diego. Take Nautilus Street up to the park at the top where you are met with incredible views. On a clear day you can look north along the coast into Orange County or south into Mexico. The park is home to an enormous cross that looks majestically down from the mountain, visible from more than 10 miles away. Interestingly, Mount Soledad holds the last home lived in by Dr. Seuss. His widow, Audrey Geisel still lives on Mt. Soledad in an abandoned observation tower that is referred to as "the Seuss House" by local residents.

Situated over the ocean on sandstone bluffs north of La Jolla, between Torrey Pines Park and La Jolla Farms, The Torrey Pines Gliderport is designated specifically for today's gliders. On days when the winds are just right, gliders line the cliffs, waiting for the perfect gust to carry them into the sky. The graceful navigators riding the sea breezes in their brightly colored gliders attract admiring spectators up and down the Torrey Pines shoreline year-round. You can fly like a bird by going tandem with an instructor after a 30-minute ground school, then up and away off the edge of a 300 foot cliff out over the ocean, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A Lovely Beach Town On The Pacific Ocean

By Heather Hunnefeld

The little beach-town of Solana Beach is nestled along the Pacific Ocean's sandy coast approximately 22 miles north of the San Diego airport. It's bordered by the protected San Elijo Lagoon (great hiking and jogging trails!) on the north, the chic town of Del Mar (and it's horse race track) on the south, the popular Lomas Santa Fe Country Club on the east and, of course, the sparkling Pacific Ocean on the west.

The climate is near perfect with winter high temperatures ranging from 59 - 63 with abundant sunshine. Summer high temperatures average 74 - 79 pleasant degrees thanks to the refreshing breezes off the ocean. This ideal weather and two miles of gorgeous coastline result in a tropical paradise - as a result, home prices average from one to two million dollars.

The city is a favorite destination for visitors who enjoy eclectic shops, great dining, golfing, nightlife, bicycling, beach sports and hiking. Every evening finds visitors and locals gathering at Fletcher Cove to enjoy the sunset.

The Cedros Design District is well-known as an enclave of coolness with the quaintness and aura of a European side-street. Here visitors find an enchanting 2 blocks of more than 85 unique and trendy shops: furniture from around the world, out of the ordinary antiques, hand-woven tapestry, charming jewelry, adventure gear, organic restaurants, spas, studios and salons. all coming together to make Cedros one of San Diego's most interesting areas.

Famous in San Diego and throughout Southern California, the Belly Up Tavern in Cedros has a long history of bringing diverse musical acts on an almost nightly basis. It's been voted the best live music establishment in San Diego almost annually by the media and has even been called "one of the hippest and hottest music scenes anywhere on the California coast" by Rolling Stone Magazine.

Next door to the Cedros District is part of coastal California's outstanding rail system. The local commuter train, the Coaster, and California's coastal Amtrak stop at the Solana Beach station at 105 N. Cedros Ave., providing easy access to San Diego as well as towns and cities along the coast of California.

Each summer the Solana Beach Triathlon Club sponsors the Solana Beach Triathlon starting with an ocean swim and followed by bike riding and a three mile run. Thousands of participants and spectators fill Solana Beach each year to enjoy friends, family, weather and sports in the town of surf, sand and sun.

Solana Beach was featured on all the cable news networks a few years ago when it became the first U.S. city to ban smoking on public beaches. Since that controversial decision, often led by high-schools clean-ups and rallies, dozens of other California communities have followed in prohibiting smoking on their beaches.

Like many San Diego coastal beach towns, Solana Beach is a mix of the old and the new. The coastal area is older, built in the 50s and 60s. This main part of town along historic Highway U.S. 101 is a mix of antique shops, older and remodeled homes, galleries, restaurants, hotels, resorts and apartments.

East of Interstate 5 is the Lomas Santa Fe golf course surrounded by high-priced newer homes. More than two-thirds of Solana Beach was built in the last twenty years. The Jenny Craig Corporation is located in Solana Beach, employing more than 180 people.

There are many lovely inns near the beaches in the San Diego area including Solana Beach Bed and Breakfasts and Cardiff By The Sea Inns.

Carlsbad Hotels - Pick From Luxury, Moderately Priced, And Budget Hotels

By Heather Hunnefeld

You can spend the night in Carlsbad in a luxury spa or you can take the kids and stay in a nice hotel with a pool, or you can sleep the night away in a budget hotel that will keep you comfortable and happy. Carlsbad Hotels include all three price ranges. There should be no problem finding the right one to meet your needs.

Carlsbad is famous for some of the spas or resorts that are in the city and in the foothills. There are those that cater to your every whim and need. The La Costa Resort and Spa is a very popular one that is located away from the city in the quietness of the foothills. You can take advantage of the 17 tennis courts or swim and sun near the five outdoor pools. You can make a day of the spa and fitness center or go golfing on 2 golf courses that have ties with the PGA championships. The style of the hotel is very pleasing to the eye with Spanish Flair. It is a sprawling hotel with tiled rooftops and stucco buildings. Even the rooms have the heavy Spanish mahogany tables and dressers and very comfortable beds. Look to the staff for you every need and they will get you what ever you want. Children are welcome at this resort and stay free with an adult.

Although this is a spa and resort hotel La Costa is very family friendly. One of the pools is specifically for families with a sandy beach and several waterslides. They operate a program called Kidtopia for kids to 12 years of age. Here they explore, make crafts, and play games on an interactive game floor. There is something for the teen to do too at the Vibz with x-box lounge, other arcade games and pool tables. Adults can take advantage of the steam room and sauna, pools, fitness center and other amenities. You will not have to go anywhere else because there are several restaurants on the property including a Bistro, Grill, several cafes including those that are poolside, bars, and lounges. There is a parking fee per day. Rooms cost anywhere from USD $300 to $400 per night.

If that is a little rich for your blood you can try the Homestead Suites Carlsbad North. It is out near the Aquarium and Legoland is only a short distance away. The Two Queen Suite has 2 queen beds or a sofa bed and all rooms come with air and cable TV. The price of a room is around USD $120 to $150 each night.

A less expensive hotel near Legoland and the beach is the La Quinta Inn. It has fewer amenities as the other hotels yet still provides weary travelers with a nice place to stay. Every morning starts with a complimentary breakfast where you make your own waffles or hard boiled eggs or choose from some of the other offerings. You can swim in the outdoor pool or soak in the spa. There is also a fitness center. The rooms are air conditioned and have cable TV, coffee maker, a small microwave and refrigerator and hair dryer. You can easily walk to many great restaurants in the area. King rooms have one king bed while the King Suite has a King bed and also a sofa bed so the kids have somewhere to sleep. You will spend about USD $65 up to $80.

There are many more Carlsbad Hotels both inside the city and in the outskirts. You can choose from the pricey resorts or spas or go to something that costs less but still has many amenities you desire. Tea Factory Visit - Dambatenne

By Jonny Blair

In Sri Lanka, tea is the national drink. Well it has to be! Every day almost every nationality in the world will sip a liquid that was made from leaves grown here in the mysterious hills of Sri Lanka. I made the trip to the valleys and hills at Haputale in Sri Lanka to the impressive Dambatenne Tea Factory, opened by Thomas Lipton over 100 years ago. It is currently a source of tea for Scottish based company Lipton Tea amongst other worldwide tea companies and distributors. All the tea is grown locally here in the gorgeous mountains and valleys of Sri Lanka's inland region.[]

It's in the middle of nowhere in fact so visiting Dambatenne tea factory is an off the beaten track gem. If you've grown up on drinking tea it's a place not to be missed though I must say.

Getting to Dambatenne Tea Factory

It's not going to be easy to get there. There are no rail or bus links directly, so your best bet is to get to the mountain village of Haputale first and get a local bus over to Dambatenne. Tuk tuks/three wheelers are also available. You can also go with a tour group. A local driver was my preferred option and worked a treat. []

How much does it cost to visit Dambatenne Tea Factory?

The entrance fee is a simple 250 Rupees, payable in cash only at the front door. You may have to wait until one of the workers is available to take you round. It's not busy at all - despite being a great place to visit and one of my travel highlights, this is still well off the normal traveller's trail - worth getting out to.

How long does a tour of the Dambatenne Tea Factory last?

Your tour will be split into three main parts and should take around 25 minutes:

1. First of all you visit a room upstairs where the tea has just arrived in from the mountains. Here the tea leaves are put into machines ready for the process.

2. Next you visit a massive downstairs room where the tea is refined in different stages before it is finally heated.

3. The tea is heated and then cooled and put into bags ready for shipment.

No photos are permitted during parts 2 or 3. The below photo is from the upstairs room. The workers are hard at work while you're walking around, for this reason I respected the "no photos" rule. With regards to opening hours, check and ask around at the time, as a general rule it's normally 9 - 5pm but don't take my word for it.

What else is the tour about?

It's a very basic and quick tour and that's really all there is to it. I was surprised to learn that there is NO tea shop or even souvenir shop there - I'd have thought they would have made money from something like that, but alas the only thing you can do is buy a fresh packet of Dambatenne Tea!!

The packet of tea cost 300 Rupees and that's the Dambatenne stuff. However the better tea called Simondou costs a whopping 1,100 Rupees! You can also buy them in the nearby towns of course.

What else is there to do nearby?

The region is very hilly so admiring the view is the best thing to do, if you hire a driver they can stop wherever you like:

1. Admire the views of the mountains

2. Walk round the tea plantations

3. Enjoy a cup of tea in a cafe with an impressive view

4. Visit Haputale town and stay in a hotel, check out the markets and shops (there is also an ATM in the town)

So that's really all there is to it - it's a short and sweet tour but definitely worth doing!

OK it's tea time!

Travel Tips That Can Make Your Life Easier

By Johnathan Black

Travel can be one of the most stressful parts of life, but also one of the most rewarding. Being prepared and knowing what to expect on the road, at sea or in the air is essential to having a good trip. Read on to discover some knowledge that you can use to make good memories away from home.

Package tours are a way to get the most out of a limited travel budget. Investigate the opportunities available at a particular destination. It may be possible to do more, see more and have more fun by investing in a package deal that includes extra services and amenities. These packages frequently offer savings that are impossible to replicate through buying individual services.

Ask family and friends for suggestions on places you should visit when trying to plan your next vacation. Often times they will not only be able to give you good suggestions for places that you should go, they can also steer you away from places that they didn't have such a good time.

If you are collecting frequent flier miles from your travels, pay attention to the terms of use for those miles. In many cases, the miles expire just twelve to eighteen months after they've been earned, or they can only be used on certain dates and to a limited set of locations. Before selecting an airline based on miles, know the restrictions.

Pack dryer sheets into your luggage. If you have ever flown before, you might have noticed that sometimes your luggage can come back smelling just a little odd. To eliminate this problem and keep your clothes and possessions smelling fresh, use dryer sheets. Pack them in between layers of clothing.

Try and get as much knowledge of the destination you're going to travel to before you arrive there. You want to have an idea of the things you want to do rather than finally getting to the hotel and feeling lost and bored. You can also ask hotel employees and locals where good places to check out are.

Before leaving on an overseas vacation, ensure that there are at least six months from your planned date of travel and when your passport expires. Many airlines will refuse to allow you to board unless you meet this minimum requirement. In other cases, you will not be able to enter your destination country. In any case, it is easier to 'be safe than sorry.'

Ninety percent of any good trip is preparation and knowledge. Having read this article, hopefully, you are now full of ideas on getting ready for and surviving your next adventure away from home. Apply what you have learned and you are sure to come home with good memories of visited destinations.

Something You Need To Know About Boca Raton Florida

By Jozy Mozen

In Boca Raton Florida, there are approximately 87,000 people, although many people with a postal address within this city live nearby, and only travel there for business purposes. Due to this fact, the city is more crowded during the daytime. It is located on the eastern coast of Florida, between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and falls under the jurisdiction of Palm Beach county.

This very attractive city alongside the ocean has a fairly flat terrain, with only a few hills above sea level. The highest point is the guard shack at Camino Gardens, and the appropriately named High Street, or 4th Avenue, is another higher part. The city is lovely for tourists, and it offers safe neighborhoods for its residents. Some people feel only the rich can afford it, but there is plenty to do on a budget as well. The climate is warm, and the beaches are inviting.

There are several restaurants that look out over the sea. There are Italian, casual and grill-style restaurants, offering foods that range from pasta and steaks to sandwiches and hamburgers. Visitors on a budget, however, can satisfy their appetites at places like Sal's New York Grill and the Cannoli Kitchen. There are also many more restaurants that offer average prices for quality meals.

For a particularly special evening out, one can go to the finer restaurants like New York Prime and Ristorant Bova. Their foods are of the best quality, and they have a good selection of fine wines. All-night parties are not really a big part of this city, but a few dance clubs are around for entertainment and many bars are found throughout the city. The New York Comedy Club is quite famous, as it has been a performing venue for numerous well-known comedians.

Visitors can shop till they drop at any of the city's large centers. Along Glades Road is the Town Center Mall, filled with high-end boutiques. Nearby, are also Mizner Park and Royal Palm Place, both with a selection of good stores selling all sorts of items. Quite a few private and public schools serve the children of the city, while the young adults can go to Palm Beach State College, Lynn University or another of the higher learning facilities.

A important part of the city is the Caldwell Theater Company, one of the oldest theaters in the surrounding area. Many fabulous performances are held here. Approximately four cinemas are available, but only one is considered as upper class, with luxurious chairs, pillows and a food order service. This is the iPic Theater.

Kids attractions include the Coconut Cove Waterpark and the Sugar Sands Park, but the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a lovelyouting as well. It has a rehabilitation center for turtles, a butterfly garden and many other things. It may be entered free of charge. The city's Museum of Art is interesting, and worth a visit too.

Whether you prefer outside or inside entertainment, Boca Raton lifestyle has much to offer. The outdoor sporting facilities are plentiful at the parks, and indoor activities include go karts, mini golf, arcade games and laser tag. You may want to rent a car for transport, as most people drive their own vehicles, however, there are buses by Palm Tran available.
