Discover Chichen Itza's Special Gods

By Linda Patterson

The polytheistic Mayans are noted for worshipping and offering sacrifices to a complex pantheon of deities. The city of Chichen Itza is renowned for its magnificent temple pyramids that pay tribute to many of these gods; it's also one of the Mayan Kingdom's most powerful and enduring metropolises and among the most visited relics of today, yet only two of these Gods are represented with special frequency and they are Chak, the rain god, and Kukulkan, the feathered serpent.

Chak - The Mayan's Oldest God And God Of Rain

One of the oldest gods is Chak; and in ancient Maya sites like Chichen Itza, you can find masks of Chak's face as a common adornment which are found in great numbers over the doorways and on columns of buildings. Chak is the Mayan's god of storms, rain and lighting and his thunderbolts are often in the form of fearsome serpents and he gained a great deal of respect among the Mayans. The cult of Chak still exists among the small number of surviving indigenous Mayans in South and Central America which is in fact a considerable triumph for a god to endure whose religion was generally demolished ages ago. At the sacred well of Chichen Itza, the Mayans make human sacrifices, specifically to curry favour with Chak. According to legend, the Maya were able to cultivate corn during the ancient times when Chak broke open a rock, wherein the original seeds of maize were locked inside. He was particularly significant to the Maya as a result of unforeseen nature of the weather in the Yucatan and also in nearby regions. Rivers are not of much abundance there and most communities relied so much on underground streams and cenotes for sustenance. Ample evidences pointed out that the growth of the Mayan cities was greatly devastated by periods of drought and prolonged drought have caused the decline of the Post-Classic of the entire civilization.

The Serpent Deity Of The Maya - Kulkulkan

A lot of Mesoamerican cultures are discovered to worship a serpent god; this was Kulkulkan, for the Mayans, and more than a hundred years he went up in popularity being among the most widely-revered of all the different gods in the pantheon of the Maya. This was due in no small part to the rise of Chichen Itza being a significant political and also economic strength in the Yucatan. Kukulkan was portrayed as an enormous snake with gaping jaws and resplendent feathers in Mayan artwork; such depictions in great numbers can be found around the pyramid at El Castillo and the Great Ballcourt at Chichen Itza. On the fall and spring equinoxes, an occasion known as the Descent of the Serpent creates the shadows cast by the sun at the northern stairway in order to combine with the wonderful serpent heads at the bottom of the structure, making the picture of a serpent wriggling its way on the pyramid. Kukulkan was most commonly identified with the War Serpent motif, patron of warriors and successful military conquests during the early Classic period. These associations withered, and Kukulkan came to symbolize the divine right of ruler ship commanded by the city's kings, and by extension, the city itself over its surrounding tributaries as Chichen Itza rose in prominence.

The serpents were a sacred animals to the Mayans; they deemed that the planets and stars in the heavens, whose motions they seen with unfailing accuracy as well as interest, were transferred on the backs of legendary snakes. The Vision Serpent which they regard as a divine entity is associated with Kukulkan, and was responsible for facilitating communication between the Mayans' gods as well as their ruling elite. In the same manner, the common belief in Kukulkan aided to facilitate conversation and also trade through the Mayan empire. Being a wealth and importance of Chichen Itza, and the center of worship for the cult of Kukulcan, grew a shared reverence for this particular god helped to ease provincial barriers and joined disparate city states with different religious, political, and ethnic backgrounds, improving the Itza state at the same time uniting much of the Yucatan in a network of trade and communication.

Finding Tours And Trips To Peru

By Earlene Silversmith

Although if you are traveling from Europe South America can seem quite a distance, nevertheless it is well worth considering it as your next holiday destination. There are many tours to Peru available online. This is a fascinating country with so much history and natural beauty to captivate tourists of all ages. In fact there is so much to see that one vacation may just not be enough.

On one hand you will find the snow capped peaks of the Andes. On the other, lies the rainforest of the Amazon. The population is made up of Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians and each group has made its mark whether culturally or gastronomically or both. Before even the Spanish were the Incas and it is the relics of their civilization which bring so many people to explore Peru.

As capital cities go Lima looks no different to any other and is beset with a troublesome fog which shrouds its beauty and ugliness alike from view. However it is a surprising city too and well worth exploring. Churches and their festivals abound. Museums and colonial buildings nestle among shopping malls and high rise apartment blocks. And at night it rocks to the beat of its multi ethnic music.

Peru is perhaps most famous for its Inca civilization and in particular Machu Picchu which is known as the lost city. An excursion to Cusco and the Sacred Valley ending up at Machu Picchu is a must for most travelers. Despite its discovery about 100 years ago by the American Hiram Bingham and the numbers of tourists who annually invade its peaceful surroundings, the area retains its grandeur and even hauteur as if it still has many secrets which it will not easily surrender.

Another must is a tour to Lake Titicaca. This beautiful lake is famous among other things for its floating islands. These are largely man made out of reeds which grow in the lake and then more reeds placed on to them. The bigger ones are stable enough to support hotels and restaurants as well as homes.

If ancient history and mountain climbing are not to your taste then you should plan a few days stay at a jungle lodge in the Manu National Park and Biosphere reserve. This is home to some 200 species of mammals at least half of which are bats. There are also 1,000 species of birds and thousands of flowering plants for your delight.

Peruvian cuisine is largely based on seafood although they are said to favor roasted guinea pigs too. Because it is so mixed ethnically, every kind of food is available. Olives and falafels and all kinds of wraps figure largely on most menus.

There are plenty of tours to Peru to choose from. Decide on your budget and how long you can stay. Then pick out the excursions you most want to do. Finding an online tour to fit your requirements should not be a problem at all.

The Hippest Place in Palm Springs

By Mitchell Sussman

Melvyn's Restaurant, located in the World Famous Ingleside Inn, Palm Springs is still swinging like the great days of the "Rat Pack". In the past few months, there has been a tremendous increase of a younger crowd visiting Melvyn's at night. What they are discovering is the same thing that made Melvyn's a stylish hangout for celebrities 30 years ago - it's Cool!

Recent visitors to this long time Palm Springs landmark include multiple Grammy Award winning Singer/Songwriter Norah Jones, Tori Spelling and her husband, Dean McDermott, "Dancing with the Stars" winner, Kym Johnson, Aidan Quinn and Marcia Gay, Allen Cummings, as well as long time regulars, Richard Anderson aka "Oscar Goldman from The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman", and from the World of sports, Basketball Superstar, Bill Walton, just to name a few.

In business for almost 40 years, and long ago recognized as one of the "Ten Best" by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Melvyn's and the Ingleside Inn have always attracted the glamor crowd and their celebrity friends. Being a local who loves to hang at this place, the fact that a whole new young generation of modern sophisticates are discovering this very unique and special place to dine and dance the night away means that this is still one of the "hippest" places in town.

During my recent visit to this hot spot, I couldn't help but notice the smartphones burning up the social media airwaves posting to their Facebook wall pictures shot in the restaurant and on the hotel grounds or texting and tweeting their friends about Melvyn's.

I couldn't help but notice that the crowd of beautiful people looked more like a Hollywood crowd than one from desert. The boss, Mel Haber. likes to say that "We attract guests from all over the World who come here to get away from the 'norm' and to feel like a celebrity, if only for a brief time." and based upon what I saw on my last visit, it is hard to argue.

There are the regulars, who consist of a well seasoned crowd that always has a story to tell about the 'Rat Pack' or the celebrities they had a chance to meet at their favorite haunt. However, it is the younger crowd that has this place hopping till all hours of the night.

If you are looking for a place to stop for a great meal, Melvyn's Restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner and its bar and lounge come alive every evening starting around 8p.m. If, however, you want to dance the night away, you should get there no later than 10 p.m. as the dance floor is packed by then with some of the most beautiful people you will ever see.

Learn More About The Interesting Mayan Rituals

By Frank D. Gardner

The Mayans are highly religious people, for them death was something to be feared and revered. For them, their god's judgment is something to be considered important, which makes them afraid of the world beyond, even while they believed in a heaven-like afterlife. They have a great respect for their dead, they mourn extensively and keep their memory alive by telling the dead's achievements in life. Although the procedure for burial transformed through the years, the thing that didn't was the sophisticated method in which they'd conduct it.

Heaven And Hell According To The Mayans

One of the Mayan's belief is that particular deaths were nobler than the others. People who gave themselves for sacrifices, died on the battleground, or died due to giving birth were thought to have passed away nobly and considered to have been taken right to heaven to savor the afterlife.

Individuals who enjoyed their lives in avarice as well as crime, nevertheless, were damned to suffer for all eternity in the Xilbalba, the underworld or hell version of the Mayan. For those that didn't fall under both of these categories, it was thought that they made a journey, with heaven as their objective, and might get a second life in the world via rebirth. The ones from significant family tree, nevertheless, were made into deities that watched over their surviving family members and also the descendants to come.

Very Old Burials

The dead themselves were buried at places that oriented around access to another world. North and west are the directions of the two heavens which the Mayans believed in; which is the reason why some burial sites are made to point to both or any of those directions. The others were buried in caves as they believe that caves are entrances to the other world. No matter if they were laid to rest in a cave or in a monument, or possibly below the ground, in the case of commoners, very good preparation as well as ritual went into being certain that they would have a good journey to the other side.

Almost all the bodies were buried with maize in the mouths, mainly because their family wished them to have food for their voyage into the other world. Jade or stone beads are the form of currency provided for the journey which is normally placed in their mouths. Things just like whistles and also small carvings of deities and animals also were put in as a burial offering, since they were expected to aid the passed away find their way to the spirit world. For the Mayans, red is the color of death and rebirth which was often painted on the tomb's wall and on the bodies themselves.

The specific burial of the individual generally depended on the era through which they lived and also died. During the past years, the bodies were entombed in flexed position, yet, eventually, they were entombed flat on their backs, similar to the way we bury our dead nowadays. At the same time, cremation turned out to be a very popular approach to bury a person, rather than the intricate sites.

Social Status

The social status has a great influence the way the body is buried. In general, commoners are entombed near or underneath their homes. Men and women of high-rank usually were entombed in family crypts, yet it wasn't rare for them to be buried under the family house also. Merely the city's most prominent ruler had the monies, man-power, plus ability to create intricate tombs within ceremonial buildings, just like a pyramid.

Among The Most Frequently Neglected Wonders of Chichn Itz

By Linda Patterson

Anyone making a trip to the amazing Maya ruins at Chichn Itz will have a long list of sites to visit in and around the vast complex of temples and pyramids. Many of the most popular attractions have become household names, and watchwords for the engineering and artistic magnificence of the Mayan culture the huge pyramid El Castillo, the enormous Great Ballcourt, and the intriguing Observatory, to name a few. However, you might not be aware that hidden away within the boundaries of the ancient city are several lesser-known but equally fascinating sights that bespeak the grandeur and skill of the civilization which created them.

First is the Red House, or Casa Colorada, which takes its name from the shards of red paint that were discovered on the floor within the building. In the Nahuatl language, the Red House is called Chichancob, which most likely means small holes, a reference to the roof made of lime comb. However, the building's most salient feature is not its paint scheme nor its roof, but rather, its walls.

The Chichancob consists of four rooms, including an antechamber and external ball court adjacent to the back wall. Each room has walls filled with intricately carved hieroglyphs. One of the most well-preserved of all Chichn Itz's structures, the Red House's panoply of carvings have been dated to as early as 869 AD, and appear to tell stories about the rulers and nobility of the city over the generations. The building was probably constructed specifically to house these glyphs, and today they stand as a perplexing but intriguing testament to the longevity of the Mayans, and indeed of Chichn Itz itself.

The Temple of the Three Lintels

The Temple of the Three Lintels was, in all likelihood, not a temple at all, but rather a residence for Chichn Itz's royals or nobility. It takes it name from the elaborate hieroglyphs that rest above the structure's three entrances. Otherwise, however, the building is quite plain and modest; the outer walls lack ornamentation other than a lattice-like pattern of crosses on the cornice, making it a surprisingly unassuming place for royalty to dwell.

Scientists have discovered evidence of ritual offerings in the immediate area, leading them to believe that the Temple was frequently a site of Mayan Fire Rituals. The Chac mask figures with long, distended noses that perch watchfully near the entrances are a common architectural feature of Mayan structures; they believed to have a role in granting tribute to the Rain God, perhaps to enure a good harvest in the year to come.

Temple of the Bearded Man

Another site worth investigating, which is often overshadowed by a nearby famous structure, is the North Temple, or Temple of the Bearded Man. Lying as it does at one end of the Great Ballcourt, many visitors pass by this interesting building without taking much notice. However, the intricate carvings and bas relief artwork that cover the interior walls are certainly worth a look. Most notable is the temple's namesake, a central figure with carvings under his chin that give the impression of facial hair.
