Once The Moment And Circumstances Are Correct, You Will Catch Me By The Waterside

The best news this morning is that my bed does not despise me. I'm not sure about the reason for the shoulder pain still, but the situation with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by nodding off in front of the television whilst watching the Test Match and being incapable to retain wakefulness. At least I managed to see the termination of the match. It will not be happening again, I am very much a Test match fan and will not be bothering to remain up for the limited over games. Besides, this being a Friday, in the coming weeks I'll be trying to get an early start at work so that I can nick off in the afternoon to go angling.

What with Mrs Izzard resuming work after a long sick leave due to breast cancer treatment since April in a couple of weeks, and the likelihood of the weather getting milder through February and March, the temptation of the canal towpath will very likely be overpowering now that I have chosen to update the fishing tackle and begin fishing again.

When I was looking through my fishing tackle last week, I came across an old rod licence which was dated 1994, which most likely was the previous year I went angling. It seems a really long time and yet I remember it clearly, a hot day in June when I went for a day's angling on the Thames at Walton, and I caught my single ever barbel. This could seem weird, but the majority of the fishing I did as a boy was on a little lake in Cranleigh where I grew up, and barbel are a river fish.

Then, I didn't have a a lot of fishing tackle as I did not have very much money and yet I still have most of it from then. I find it staggering that even when I started to earn decent money, I never really thought about fishing or spending some money and stcoking up on some really top fishing tackle and using up more time by the water.

When I do resume, I will need to shell out some cash, initially getting a rod licence and joining the Birmingham Anglers Association who are in charge of angling on the canals around here, then I will need some new fishing tackle as mine is ancient and probably illegal now, especially the hooks which all appear to have barbs which I am fairly sure are not allowed now.

I can't wait to return, though I'm not ashamed to say that I was always and assuredly will be now, a very fair weather fisher, so I will need dry, warm conditions. It doesn't have to be hot, just not wet and cold and if it's a Friday after the present Mrs Izzard has returned to work (and I'm legal) then the likelihood is I'm going to go fishing. Love it.
