Visiting the Lake District

By Bob Duke

The Lake District

The closest you will get to mountains in England is the Lake District National Park in the Cumbrian Hills. The highest of these hills is Scafell Pike at 978m. It is England's highest peak and third tallest in the British Isles, following Ben Nevis and Snowdon.

The Lake District is a favourite location for eco tourism, but as the home of poet William Wordsworth it also has a distinct air of romanticism.

Kids can be entertained for hours on end and will love the outdoor activities at the Lake District, although parents may find it hard to keep up!

You will need to equip yourself with all the necessary kit, which includes a good strong pair of hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, warm socks and a map. Once that part is sorted, you will be ready to take on 3,500km of tracks, all of which have right of way. It is advisable that you choose a route suitable for your energy levels, as well as the type of terrain you are comfortable covering. Moorland and lake routes provide a flatter trek, but those looking for the challenge of a steep incline and even the odd scramble should give the higher peaks in the Barrowdale area a shot.

Accommodation is available in many forms in the Lake District. You may wish to go back to nature and stay on some of the finest campsites you will ever see, especially when you see the picturesque scenery on offer. If you prefer a solid roof over your head, Bed & Breakfasts provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere and, more importantly, a full English breakfast to get you going in the morning.

For more a more luxurious experience (blessed with baths to sooth weary limbs), head to Gilpin Lodge in Windemere, whose opulent finishings and exclusive spa are just the ticket.

The more extreme holidaymaker can satisfy their urges with mountain biking, climbing, abseiling, kayaking and much more. True adrenalin junkies will be put to the test by zorbing, in which you roll down a hill in a giant plastic orb! It really separates the men from the boys.

After a day of breathing in that fine countryside air, you will need to replenish your energy levels and there is no better way than with a traditional cream tea. Cover a warm scone with clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam and you're in heaven. These can be enjoyed in the Lake District tearoom, which you will no doubt have noticed during your visit.

Grasmere Gingerbread's reputation is far greater than the size of the tiny shop in which it is sold. Their recipe is a closely-guarded secret and the smell is enough to draw you to the queue which snakes outside the front door.

In search of good-hearty pub food you might want to detour to The Drunken Duck in Ambleside a few minutes drive from the Coniston Old Man. It is highly recommended as an independent pub and has been owned by the same family for about 40 years. They are also a microbrewery and their veranda, with spectacular views, is a more-than-ideal location to sip a pint.

People from all around travel to this small corner of England, and who can blame them? With its delicious food and breathtaking scenery, you won't be disappointed.

Tips on how to monkey-proof your apartments and real estate in Rio de Janeiro

By Leandro Tipaldo

As soon as you started studying apartments and real estate in Rio de Janeiro you most likely had numerous things in mind. First and foremost was likely the attractive beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana. Sipping chilled drinks from you penthouse holiday. Secondly, if you are savvy, you might have thought about the tourist attractions. Christ the Redeemer, the sugar loaf and most certainly the crazy nights on the town in Lapa. This was most likely what you were thinking after you started to cruise for sale ads in search of a permanent dwelling in Brazil. But there was probably something you didn't anticipate. Monkeys.

Yes, I said monkeys. What you think about if you think monkeys? Certainly it suits the ideal tropical environment. So you've probably got it in your mind, "oh wow, how exotic that must be." I can have my little monkey! It will be great! I will be the envy of all my pals back home. Maybe I can even catch some and put them up for sale.

Well slow down there buckaroo. Before you choose to invite monkeys into your apartments and wish for the little rascals to be crawling all over your real estate, I've got information for you. The first bit is going to be that inviting a monkey into your penthouse in Copacabana or Ipanema is best when compared to inviting a vampire into your house. Oh sure, they can be charming little creatures and you will easily be enticed by their exotic features. However, you will soon be rendered helpless and your lovely little piece of real estate will quickly be overrun.

You see, monkeys are the raccoons of Rio de Janeiro. They are clever, cunning little critters. Once they discover a way into your apartments and they understand that there are good things to be had, well they'll strategically discover other ways to penetrate. This can be guaranteed. Before long you will end up forced to put your vacation home for sale. Evicted as a consequence of monkeys.

So be warned, padlock your doors, close your windows and keep your bananas covered. Those little monkeys are the scavengers of Rio de Janeiro and nothing at all will stand in the way of their ambitions. You can take a quick trip to the beach or the store. It's not even important to travel far. When you return, rest assured that your fuzzy little friends will have made themselves comfortable. This is a forgone conclusion. So you can't say that I didn't warn you.

Cuzco To Machu Picchu A Must-Do Journey

By Maureen Kerr

Cuzco or Cusco is both a city and region in the southeastern quarter of Peru near the Urubamba (or Scared) Valley of the Inca. Most tourists arrive to complete the Cuzco to Machu Picchu trek. Cuzco was once the capital of the fabled Inca empire. The city was recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) in 1983 as a World Heritage site. Cusco is also flattered by being mentioned in the Peruvian Constitution as the historical capital.

The city is also honored by being formally recognized in the Constitution of Peru as the historical capital of the nation. Cusco is estimated to have been founded in 1100 AD by the Killke culture. The Killke were responsible for building the extraordinary walled complex of Sacsayhuaman (pronounced sexy woman) on the outskirts of Cusco.

The city has a permanent population of almost 0.4 million residents and receives about 1.5 million tourists per year. It is among the top destinations for visitors to Peru. If you are ever lucky enough to visit, prepare yourself well for its high altitude. Cuzco sits high in the Andes at about 11,200 feet (3,400 meters). The view to the mountains is stunning.

Most newcomers to the city need about a day to adjust. The effects can range from a deep lethargy to euphoria similar to alcoholic intoxication. Even walking is best avoided during the first day.

Most people travel to Machu Picchu by train. That journey takes from three to four and a half hours and may require an early morning start depending on the particular train service used. Machu Picchu is located roughly north and east of Cusco. The distance between the two spots is some 70 kms (45 miles) in a straight line but 120 kms (75 miles) as actual distance travelled.

The vistas along the route is totally unique and dramatic. Most people rate it as a journey of a lifetime. In addition to being loads of fun, the trek builds a growing excitement for the inspiring experience that is Machu Picchu. Most people try and get on the earliest train they can so that can spend as much time there as possible.

The Cuzco to Machu Picchu trek usually begins with a taxi, bus or bike ride from the hotel to the Poroy train station (allow 20-30 minutes) from downtown Cusco CBD. Poroy is the departure point for all trains. The service is managed and operated by Peru Rail. The service is safe, comfortable and world class.

Campbell knee operation to rule him out next season

By Ben Williams

Sunderland have been forced to deal with more than their fair share of injury blows and general setbacks this season, but the latest piece of injury news to come their way is perhaps the most alarming and disappointing of them all.

Steve Bruce, the man who has had to lead his team through the trials and tribulations of the Premier League despite all of their well-documented injury problems, has been informed that striker Fraizer Campbell may be forced to sit out the majority of next season as he attempts to make a full recovery from a knee operation scheduled for this week.

Campbell, who signed for the club almost two years ago, was an instant hit upon arrival at Sunderland, the forward moving from Manchester United in the summer of 2009, but damaged his cruciate ligament in August 2010 and has failed to make a full recovery since then, with a twisted knee further hindering his attempt to make a successful comeback earlier this month.

Campbell should still have a bright future in the game, even if he is forced to miss most of the action next season in the league, with the Sunderland man still only 23 years of age and already well on his way to proving his quality at the top level after scoring seven goals for the Black Cats.

However, the question must now be asked as to how Steve Bruce will cope for the rest of the campaign, with the club's injury list now extended ridiculously. Danny Welbeck, on loan from Manchester United, is struggling with an injury to his hamstring, and crucial defender Titus Bramble has been told he won't be able to make a return to first team action before the season ends due to a serious knee injury.

Sunderland fans will still trust a man who has done very well with the club but Bruce will certainly be feeling the heat, there's no doubt about that.

Great Ways To Get A Car Hire At A Reasonable Price

By Jason Hall

These days no matter what you are shopping for you are probably looking for some ways to keep a few dollars in your pocket, everyone is. Yet somehow when it comes to renting a vehicle it looks as if the costs are continuously increasingly. Well, the following are a few ways that you can avoid paying additional charges for that rental vehicle.

1. Reserve Early. Making an early reservation can add up to giant savings and can also help you to prepare in advance. Lots of web pages will recommend waiting until the eleventh hour to see if you can squeeze out a deal but in most cases you will find yourself scrambling to locate a vehicle, ans it will also leave you at the mercy of the rental agencies and paying more. In the course of the past several years rental companies have decreased the number of vehicles in their fleets at most locations and this means that vehicles are not as obtainable as they were in the past, so don't count on picking up the vehicle of your choice at the last minute for a song, this probably won't happen.

2. Ask Questions. Surprisingly, the biggest thing that ends up costing people extra for their rental car is the fact that they do not ask questions like how many miles are included or what happens if we bring back the vehicle an hour late. The best way to protect yourself is to ask as many questions about the extras before booking.

3. Fees and Surcharges. Don't receive a quote and assume that is how much you will be paying. The base rate of a automobile rental is the beginning. It is advisable to have the rental automobile company give you the total for the rental period including taxes and surcharges before you make your reservation as these extras can wind up costing you a bit more.

4. Be Prepared. One of the best ways to avoid extra charges is to be prepared for your rental. This means having all the extras like car seats and GPS systems along with you as well as finding out in advance what your insurance will and won't cover on a rental vehicle. These are the top ways in which rental car companies find to charge customers more and so the more prepared you are the less your rental vehicle will wind up costing you.

5. Follow the Rules. You sign a contract with the rental company, if you do not comply with the terms of the contract, then you could take on a lot of liability. Make sure to not only read and understand this agreement, but follow it to the letter so if something goes wrong while the vehicle is in your possession the rental agency will not be able to blame you with the responsibility.

Archery: Using It To Get Out More

By Owen Jones

We are all being encouraged to get out more frequently, so many people are looking for a reason for doing it. You could choose a spectator sport like football, but that is not really going to do your body much good, you should be looking for a participation sport.

If you are younger, then play football by all means, but if you are getting on a bit, you will probably be looking for a sport that is not quite so taxing. Men like to aim and shoot things even if not kill them. Golf is an option, but I want to recommend that you give archery a try.

Archery has the edge over shooting a gun because it takes some physical fitness. It is not just a question of pulling, sorry, squeezing a trigger. If you take up archery, you will most likely want to develop some more upper-body strength, especially if the heaviest work you have done for the last twenty years is pick up a pen.

Archery is an rounded sport in many ways, depending on how much you get into it. Most novices will start out by going to an archery club and joining in for the day. People will lend them a bow and show them the safety aspects and the correct way to hold a bow and shoot an arrow. This should give you a good notion of which sort of bow you would like.

After a week or two, you may purchase your own bow and you may move from indoor target archery to outdoor target archery or even field archery, which is virtual hunting. From there, you will almost certainly meet people who take archery a step further. You will meet competition archers, bow hunters and people who assemble their own equipment.

You might find one of these aspects of archery enthralling. You may take up bow hunting or even bow fishing. This will lead you off at a tangent, because you will have to learn about the animals that you hunt. You will have to learn where they live and what their lifestyles are. This means research.

Or you can take up the archery counterpart to clay pigeon shooting, which is known as field archery. In field archery, the archers walk around a course and model animals or standard targets will become visible at diverse distances. This is fun.

You will also meet individuals who like to make their own arrows or even their own bows. This is another fascinating feature of archery. You can purchase the different components that go to make up an arrow and you can buy a kit to make a bow or you can start from scratch with an axe, a knife and a lathe. Again you will need to do a lot of research, in order to get your archery equipment just the way you want it.

This will lead you down yet another tangent to archery, but it will enhance your understanding of archery, increase your enjoyment of the sport and, as they say, add another string to your bow.

Playing Golf Courses In San Jose

By Mercedes Miles

Awesome golf courses in San Jose is in the eye of the beholder. What some golfers consider good, another golfer may not even take into consideration. There are a few key items to think about when ranking a course against other courses.

The uniqueness of a course is a plus. Holes should require some use of strategy, otherwise it becomes boring. A long, straight hole is not necessarily challenging. Each hole should work a different part of golfing. One may have a difficult pin placement, while another could sport an island green. Every hole doesn't need to be impossible, that would discourage golfers from even trying.

A course needs to be well maintained, but it should make use of the natural terrain. Save the environment by minimizing the destruction of the natural terrain and not tearing down too many trees. Another positive note for some courses is having the history of the course documented along the path. This creates interest in the area and the course.

Some golfers hold a lot of stock in the world ranking of a course. If the rankings do not include the opinion of the average golfer, then it doesn't hold much stock. If only elite professional golfers and their sponsors rank the course, that doesn't really mean much except that they have the money to advertise more. The only thing a world ranking can guarantee is a higher price to play.

The location and scenery can add greatly to the course. The natural beauty surrounding a golf course can make or break a course. Imagine seeing a beautiful coastal sunset, or snow tipped mountains along the maze of holes.

Things that are black marks against a course could include the number of homes lining the holes. Another unnecessary aspect is a course with too many tricky holes. One signature hole is memorable, but too many hard holes can discourage golfers. Golfers also don't like too many water hazards.

A good clubhouse and excellent staff service is desired by all golfers. Golfing is not an inexpensive sport, and golfers want to know that they are appreciated. A run down clubhouse is a real let down after a good round of golf. Staff should also be knowledgeable of the course.

Finding awesome golf courses in San Jose is up to each golfer. Each golfer bases their ranking of a course based on different criteria. Where a great clubhouse is necessary to some people, others only want a nice course with good greens. However they are ranked, golfers love to play on a good course.

What Are Hot Tubs

By Adriana Noton

Hot tubs are and have always been in style. Hot tubs can be found virtually everywhere. They can be found in hotels, on resort, and even in residential homes.

Hot tubs in hotels are usually found within a couple of different places. In hotels are usually in the same location as the pool. Right next to the pool which typically has cool water in it is the jacuzzi. The jacuzzi got its common name from that fact that its generally filled warm water.

Jacuzzis and hot tubs are not the same thing. Although both are filled with hot water, they differ by the infrastructure to the basin. The basin of a jacuzzi has jets placed in the sides to propel the water about.

With this being said usually hot tubs don't have this feature. However there are a few special cases where they are specifically engineered with this feature. This difference between the two types really applies to whoever is currently inhabiting them.

They are also used in spas, resorts and rehabilitation centers. These places use them as treatments and advertise their supposed calming affect on customers. Spas typically advertise more on the calm rather than for treatment.

As many of those places advertise it is widely believed that they expect hot tubs to assist in hydrotherapy. Whether or not this is true depends on the person being treated, whose doing the treatment and where the treatment is being held. In other words, the effectiveness of hydrotherapy is arbitrary. Hydrotherapy is the belief that soaking in water, or the excessive use of water can cause pain-relief, treat illnesses and heal sports injuries.

As they are used for more rehabilitating centers they are not specifically designed for medical treatments. They are also used in spas and resorts. The idea behind their use in these spas and resorts are to create a relaxing and calm environment for the people who attend them. The belief over time from different cultures is that water has some sort of healing power and can cause a sens of calmness throughout the body. This is more prevalent in cultures that evolved in areas where hot springs naturally occur.

Over time as societies evolved it has been evident that many uses and beliefs have also evolved for in conjunction with their use. Their most comprehensive evolutionary point is that they have been modeled after hot springs that occur naturally within certain environments. Lately, most of them are still designed after these Hot Tubs Toronto but continue to be modified. These such modifications include jets within the sides of the basin for the added massage-like affect. It maybe these modifications that allow for their use in junction with hydrotherapy. Again this may or may not be affective in the healing process. However if an injury seems to severe it is best to see a physician. They have evolved for multi uses and purposes, and are incorporated into many people's daily lives. Especially for the people who have them in their residence. Typically when installed into a residence they are modified to have the jets within the basins.
