Parents Exploring New Orleans Colleges Should Take A Look At Xavier Louisiana University

By David Mims

If your high school student is preparing for college one of the most important part of the process is the campus visit. This should take place during the junior year or in the fall of the senior year. If you are scouting for colleges in and around Louisiana be sure you don't overlook Xavier Louisiana University.

Xavier is a school that will appeal to a special type of student. It was founded by St. Katherine Drexel who was the second of only two Americans to be canonized by the Catholic church. Growing out of her ministry to the children of former slaves Xavier is the only university in America that is historically Black and Catholic.

Born in 1858, Katherine Drexel was wealthy and well educated. She was raised with a sense of duty to those less fortunate. When she told the Pope that she wished to donate her fortune to supporting ministry in Black and Native American communities he suggested she go to them herself.

Xavier University is one of the many schools founded by Katherine Drexel. Her heritage lives on here, both in the school's dedication to the Catholic faith and in its stated purpose to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society. Students here are expected to excel academically.

Xavier prepares students to become leaders in their chosen professions and agents for positive change within a global society. A significant number of Black pharmacists in the United States are graduates of Xavier. The pre med faculty is remarkable for the number of its graduates accepted into medical schools.

Xavier is not a party school. However even though there is no football team there is a full schedule of athletic events that attract fans from miles around. A variety of other events provide excuses for parents and families to visit the campus.

Lagniappe Summer Weekend is a great time for prospective students and their families to visit the campus. For enrolled students it's Freshman orientation. For the uncommitted or not-yet-accepted it's a time for meeting students and faculty, taking placement tests and experiencing life in the dorms. Parents have to make their own housing accommodations but that's easy enough.

Located in the Triangle section of New Orleans, Xavier is close to a number of fine hotels. The Holiday Inn Metairie New Orleans Airport hotel is only about five and a half miles from the Xavier campus. Visitors will enjoy a good night's rest after a long day of meeting, greeting and sight seeing.

Before they retire for the night guests might want to check their Email with the complimentary Wi-Fi. They might enjoy a refreshing swim in the outdoor pool or a workout in the state-of-the-art fitness center. Or they might want to kick back and watch a favorite program on the 32 inch HD TV. They might catch a rerun of It's a Different World.

Race Fans Can't Get Enough Of Dover International Speedway

By Mike Woods

Thousands of race fans heading to Dover International Speedway have already discovered the convenience of booking their stay at the Doubletree Hotel Downtown Wilmington Legal District. Comfortable guest rooms and suites are equipped with all the expected amenities and within an easy one hour drive of the race track, making it the ideal place to stay during race weekends.

The track is one of the most unique on the NASCAR circuit because of its unusual configuration. The dual purpose facility has a race track built for horses completely encircled by the one mile track built for cars. Legendary stock car champion Richard Petty won the first car race sanctioned by NASCAR on a July afternoon in 1969.

Nicknamed the Monster Mile for its seemingly voracious appetite for race cars, many drivers have gotten crossed up on its high banks and had their cars collected into the wall. Though it is only one mile in length, the speedway requires drivers to exhibit the patience and skills normally seen on much bigger race tracks.

Speedway officials immortalized Miles the Monster in 2008 when they introduced the humongous Monster Monument in Victory Plaza. At 46 feet tall, Miles will not be ignored as he glares through glowing eyes that are bright red. His menacing visage can be seen by drivers on Route 1 and no one entering the FanZone can possibly miss him as he stands with arm raised and a full sized race car clutched in his fist. The FanZone is nearly eight acres of fun with sponsor booths, interactive attractions and souvenir haulers to entertain visitors.

The property has undergone many changes over the years with the addition of Dover Downs Slots in 1995, the same year the track surface was converted to concrete. By 2001, grandstand expansions saw the seating capacity at 135,000, a number that surpassed any other mid-Atlantic region sports facility.

The race viewing experience was literally taken to new heights in 2004 when the Monster Bridge was opened for business. Fans who can score these coveted tickets are given the VIP treatment and armchair seating in a glass structure that spans the third turn. This spectacular view of the cars racing beneath their feet is something that cannot be experienced anywhere else.

When the checkered flag falls, fans can head back to Wilmington for a relaxing evening. Guest may order up some room service or head down to the lounge for a drink followed by dinner at the cafe. Race fans can count on the Doubletree to provide everything necessary for an exciting weekend getaway.

Schedule A Well Deserved Mini-vacation

By Adam Surizuo

Consumer Surveys are interesting. American Express conducted a survey among the National Association of Female Executives. According to the survey forty percent of the smallest business owners, that is those companies earning less that two hundred million dollars in revenue, haven't shut down for a vacation. On the other hand, even the owners with more than two million in revues aren't being much better. Of the high-income group, only seventy five percent planned any kind of holiday.

The NAFE Conference revealed that those business owners who actually get away from the office would not be really getting away. As it happens, one in three will use the vacation to further their operation. Fifty percent of them will take time form their holiday and check in with the office at least once a day.

Why is it that business owners can't let go? What are their concerns? What is it that keeps owners tied to their companies to that degree? According to the survey, their major concern is an important client or customer. They feel that they will miss out on a new business opportunity. Some owners feel that there isn't a competent person who can run things for even a week and will make wrong decisions

This isn't hard for an owner to feel that way. Taking a vacation for them isn't worry-free. However, with planning, preparation, and great leadership you can enjoy the excitement of their time off. Make certain that you'll not end up with a surprise. Take your current projects and set out some scenarios. Decide what should happen in these instances. Brief the staff about any possibilities and list your major concerns about each of clients. Delegate various tasks to specific staff. Entrust these people to act if the need arises.

Layout the holiday schedule and introduce the staff to it. Leadership is being a delegator not a dictator. Strategically schedule your vacation during that traditional time when your business slows a bit. Perhaps the business person should think about scheduling a mini-vacation when they just can't let go for a week or two. Try taking a few days out of town. Chances are the time away will increase your sense of trust about your staff. Busy people require a brief escape. They need to break the routine. Different surroundings will help to re-energize and correct ones perspective.

On holiday, turn off your cell phone. Don't pack the 'notebook' or laptop. Avoid the urge to check the email account. Keep your roles straight and when outside of work, connect with family and friends. Be certain to be a father to the children. Cultivate personal interests. Stay spiritually (does not mean religious) healthy pursuing the avocation chosen. Perhaps these tips will help to schedule a well deserved mini-vacation (or two) this summer.

Dance For Fitness And Feel Fabulous

By Adriana Noton

When you dance for fitness, some of the dark myths about exercise disappear. One is that it has to be dull. Another is that only athletes can do it. Finally, contrary to popular belief, even non-athletes might actually enjoy a workout when framed around the idea of fun. While lacing-up for a run may not get you excited, lacing-up for the mamba might.

In fact, it could be that your lifestyle already includes an element of fitness. If you go to clubs and get your heart rate up for a long stretch before resting, this is a great start. Ideally your body needs around half an hour of consistent movement to feel the benefits. What will make this more a conscious routine will be swapping wine for water and cutting down on fatty snacks.

Many moves have become popular of late. Some are better than others at working the heart. Still others benefit particular areas of the body in obvious ways. Belly dancing for example, really targets waist and abdominal muscles. The great thing is that individuals can start at any time and continue until they are very old, though feeling young thanks to the salsa. For parents who struggle to fit a routine in due to the routines and interruptions of kids, this is one exercise program they can join. Just turn on the radio or CD player and get moving.

No matter what sort you like best, it only works for you as fitness if you do it regularly. Just once in a while with friends is not good enough to cause significant difference in your body strength or appearance. Create a routine in which dance forms the core activity, augments other efforts, or energizes you to try new activities throughout the week.

There are many venues apart from clubs where one can get started. Head to your local gym and find out how you can enroll. Many offer dance-oriented classes focusing on Zumba, Latin or other forms.

Try your area studio instead. More and more of these are offering dance as a workout rather than for presentation of a routine. Then again, choosing to tap, salsa or belly dance as your foremost form of aerobic exercise and planning to perform is another great option. Choose a class requiring partners, like ballroom, and encourage a friend or spouse to join to. One advantage of dance as exercise only is that the steps can be changed each time: no pressure to learn a routine; not boredom from the same; anyone can jump in having missed a number of classes.

Many celebrities have taken their moves to home DVD. They teach viewers how to dance basic steps, then work these into a routine. Some can be quite complicated while others are easy enough to get the hang of in just a few viewings.

Some of these Toronto salsa classes are hosted by well-known fitness figures. They take what they know about exercise and apply it to a salsa routine. Because they understand the format of a workout DVD and how important it is to break new information down into small pieces, they can often provide a good place for beginners to start.
