Destination California

By Annie Shelton

Visit California's Coast - There are lots of beautiful places to go for a vacation near the coast of California. San Francisco seems to have the best weather throughout the year, with everything being temperate. Their summers are hot and dry and winters are a bit cold, however, not all areas are the same. San Francisco is also home to Silicon Valley, where many of the IT companies and private investors are based. The better known landmarks are Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown just to name a few. All of these are part of the city's main tourist attractions.

San Francisco is also home to several universities which deserve a visit as well. Stanford of course, Berkeley, St. Mary's College and Santa Clara University have made this area sought after for the higher learning potential. The city is also known for its liberal stance on many issues, including gay rights, this is a place for everyone who wants tolerance and acceptance. This made the city a kind of sanctuary for liberalism.

San Diego is another great place to visit. This is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest city in California, after Los Angeles. With the warmer days and mild evenings, San Diego is easy to adjust to as is being known for its cuisine, relatively low crime rate, and coastal and friendly attitude. A warning though, the city has the strictest policy on driving under the influence. In fact, there are DUI attorneys in San Diego, whose job is to prevent people from being convicted of DUI offenses. Because of this strict regulation, it makes the city less prone to incidents of DUI.

Tourism is a key industry owing to the city's climate, its beaches, and abundant tourist attractions such as: Balboa Park, Belmont amusement park, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park and Sea World San Diego. San Diego's Spanish influence is reflected in the many historic sites across the city, such as: Mission San Diego de Alcala and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Annual events in San Diego include: Comic-Con, Buick Invitational golf tournament, San Diego/Del Mar Fair, San Diego Black Film Festival, and the Street Scene Music Festival.

Another popular destination is the city of Angels or Los Angeles. Home to Hollywood, Beverly Hills and its own share of theme parks, LA is the go-to for sun, celebrities, concerts, shopping, surfing and fun! Disneyland, Magic Mountain and Universal Studios are some of the attractions found in the county of Los Angeles. Also known as Tinsel Town, given the number of film studios here, many actors and actresses are based here or at least homes here. It is a place where status seems to be the standard for actors and actresses. Some of the more enjoyable activities you can do here are: Drive down Mulholland Drive and view the city from the top of the mountains. Dance the night away at an endless variety of night clubs. Drive down to the coast and watch in awe the majestic Pacific Ocean. Perhaps the sheer excitement of meeting a celebrity may be enough for you. In any case, Los Angeles is certainly an important destination and contrary to popular belief it is possible to spend a holiday here on a budget.

The majestic California coastline is 500-plus miles from Dana Point in the south to Leggett in northern Cali. A drive along the coast is itself a wonderful destination vacation so don't rush it. Plan to spend at least 2 days driving and sight-seeing. The destinations along this route will require their own share of time to properly respect all the coast has to offer. A vacation to any of the cities or beaches will be another chapter or two in your travel journal.

Gaming on The Cheap: Billiards

By Samuel Kennedy

Billiards, as a competitive sport, isn't ordinarily seen as a rich person's game. The game of the aristocrats might be golf, or even polo. However, billiards can be more than a little expensive. The first place people often (mistakenly) look to cut corners is on the the playing instrument (the cue) itself. This less-than-ideal tactic can be rapidly overused, however, and there really is a fine line that is easily crossed when choosing between the premium end of cues, and the lower, bargain end.

First, the question must be asked: do you desire a billiard cue that's as cheap as it goes, or are you looking for playability and inlay work? At the upper end of the price range of cues you'll get both performance, and inlay. However, nowadays billiard cues can be imported and even though these cues may be priced at the bottom of the range they may still have the inlays -- but lack the performance.

The key is the price range. Anything below $200 is approximately equivalent to any other billiard cue within that price point. This is due to the fact that if the cue is an MSRP of $200, that means it wholesales for a whole lot less. Cues retailing for less than $200 are most likely made overseas where manufacturing can have poor oversight and lower overall standards. So, to be honest, if you've decided to get a $150 cue, unless you've lucked out on a real deal on a premium cue, you would be better off going for a $30 one.

As you break through the $200 tier you start to see more of the premium cue stick lines such as Meucci, Predator, McDermott, or Joss. Most of these cue sticks are created in the United States, but even the ones that are not created here tend to be of a higher quality due to greater manufacturing oversight. Just remember: if you go over the $500 tier then you are most likely paying for greater and more elaborate inlays, and not an increased performance! Avoid this if you're wanting to get the most bang for your buck.

One other tip for conserving cash: join a pool league! This will give you the opportunity to play many highly skilled gaming partners for free, or very affordably. This can serve in lieu of personalized, professional coaching.

Edmonton Gains Sole Possession of First Place In CFL West With Win Over Stamps

By Ross Everett

The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23 yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds to play to earn the victory, erasing the lead that Calgary had earned with their own TD pass less than a half minute earlier.

Winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed playing in the shootout:

"That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It's great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It's a great uplift for the team. It's a huge win for us."

With a bye week on deck, Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the outcome couldnt have been timed any better:

"Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It's going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it's a real bonus. It's great for our confidence."

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar game last year where Edmonton won by the same margin on a last play touchdown:

"They got us last year in this situation and of course you didn't think it was going to happen again or even could happen again. It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn't. And we had to stop Ray and we didn't. Kudos to Edmonton."

Both teams have a bye next week. Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton. The two CFL provincial rivals from Alberta will face each other twice more this season.

All You Need to Know About Styles of Coffee

By Damian Papworth

With all the different drinks out there, it's tough sometimes to know the difference between a soy latte and a caffe latte. Besides, who really cares, as it couldn't be that different, right? Wrong. The differences are huge between types of coffee beverages. Here's a cheat sheet for the next time you don't know what to order, or don't quite understand how something is made.

First, three of the most popular coffee-style beverages you're likely to find, whether in Rome or in Starbucks:

Espresso Most people think that espresso is a type of coffee, and don't realize that it's one of the styles of coffee. If you're looking for something high-octane, this is it. A one-ounce shot has a lot more caffeine than a regular cup of coffee, thanks to the unique process that involves pressing coffee tightly together and using very hot water.

Mocha Anytime you see the word mocha on a drink, it means that there's some sort of chocolate flavor, usually from syrup, that's been added. For instance, a caffe mocha is a cup where there's a layer of chocolate at the bottom that's then topped with steamed milk, espresso, and usually chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

Cappuccino Probably the most popular drink that people order but have no idea what they're actually getting, the cappuccino is simply one third coffee, one third milk, and one third creamy and thick froth, from milk, too. Rather than being a pompous addition to spice up a simple coffee drink, it's named after the Capuchin, which is the white and brown hood that monks wear.

There's more to knowing about styles of coffee than just remembering some of the key names to the drinks. It's even more important to know some of the processes--i.e. what heats the beans. Here are a couple of the most popular:

The French Press It's known but a bunch of different names, but the concept is always the same. A glass container has a wire part and a plunger. The coffee goes in, almost-boiling water goes on top of it, and then you physically press the coffee with the plunger part. You use coffee that's ground a little rougher in here, and basically are filtering the coffee to make a more delicious cup at home. Surprisingly, it really works.

The Drip If you've got a coffee maker at home that plugs in and doesn't sit on the stove, this is what you're most likely working with. Pour some water into a machine, add your coffee to the other part, and the coffee maker actually heats the water and eventually the dripping boiled water over the grounds makes your cup of coffee. Definitely one of the easiest ways, if not the tastiest ways, to have some coffee.

Of course drip coffee, popular in offices and homes across the land, is simply when you plug in a machine that heats the water and drips it slowly over the grounds, which are located in a filter. The taste, usually, is a little more watered down than with an at-home espresso machine.

So the scary world of coffee vocabulary is actually nothing more than a few fancy foreign language words used to describe strong coffee, hot water, and milk in various stages of being heated. Stop worrying, and start drinking. You'll be a coffee expert in no time.
