From the height of a hot air balloon, the dream like panorama could be amazing. The terrain seemed to mirror the moons' surface in areas. The balloons are available mostly in months of April, May, June, July and August, when the winds are mild enough to be safe for this kind of travel. Oxley wasn't the first European to visit Gold Coast, Captain James Cook had sailed past in 1770, and had given a couple of ominous names (Mount Warning and Point Danger) to local landmarks near the mouth of the Tweed River, and Captain Matthew Flinders had charted along the coast in 1802. However the region was not inhabited by Europeans until Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach in 1823.

Nowadays there are many hotels and apartments in the area catering for holiday makers and other visitors.
