Churchill Manitoba Polar Bear Tours Really Are Quite An Experience

By Ines Flores

The Polar Bear Capital of the World is found up in Canada. That is also where one will find many Churchill Manitoba Polar Bear Tours available. The town is in northern Canada on the west shore of the Hudson Bay. It is a very famous place as there are many bears that move towards the shored from inland mainly in the autumn.

The tours are not only there to see the polar bears but to see the Beluga whales in their natural habitat well. The Ultimate Arctic Summer Adventure is a six night get away where one will be able to view over sixty thousand of these whales in the Hudson Bay as well as getting a view of the bears leaving the pan ice. One will board a jet boat and will be taken on a tour of the river estuaries and the Bay.

The amount with airfare will be $3 285.00 per person and this includes the round trip from Churchill and Winnipeg. Without the airfare included it will set one back $2 185.00. This package includes a four night stay at the Lazy Bear Lodge as well as two nights in Winnipeg. The Hudson Bay tour will last about six to eight hours where all the wildlife can be observed.

Constantine John Phipps who was born in 1744 and died in 1792 was an explorer in the Royal Navy. He was the first to describe these animals as a species and chose their name due to the habitat they lived in. They are found mainly in the Arctic Circle and adjacent lands as far as Newfoundland. This is a large island in Canada off the east coast of North America.

The polar bear tourism business started in the 1980s. During the October and November period thousands of these grand creatures wait on the neck of land until the water in the Hudson Bay freezes over so that they can go back to hunting. During the so called summer months there are also tours available where one can see these animals both on land and swimming in the water.

The Lazy Bear Lodge has cabins made out of black and white spruce with at least one feature of a twisted log. All the logs that are used to build the lodge are recycled from forest fire kill and many are one hundred and fifty years old. There are two stories with the first floor having sixteen rooms and the upper floor with seventeen rooms.

Another sight that many go to witness is the Beluga whales also known as the White whale. They do not have a dorsal fin and have a lump at the tip of its head. The male can grow up to eighteen feet in length and weigh about one thousand and six hundred kilograms. It is estimated that there are about one hundred and fifty thousand of these creatures and the majority spend their winters in the Arctic ice cap.

Churchill Polar Bear Tours are a great get away for the whole family to enjoy. Animals that can be seen range from the Walrus, Bison as well as the Moose. Each of these is done in a Tundra Buggy and if one is lucky enough the Northern Lights can be seen.
