Great holiday locations to stay in Italy can be found all over the country. They have in common an intoxicating mixture of new and old. It is a free land, an arbiter of fashion and taste. It is also soaked in the influences that have shaped Western civilization.

Scholars and young people have travelled south over the centuries in search of their intellectual roots. Western civilization was born here, and its vestiges remain. Ancient buildings like the Coliseum stand as testimony to past evils, balancing with the breath taking beauty of Saint Peter's Cathedral.

Rome and its empire are like an enduring magnet. Western civilization was born here and through the centuries scholars and writers have returned and found inspiration in places like Florence, Venus, Verona and Naples. Shakespeare located many of his plays here. Henry James and other giants of English Literature chose Italian settings for their works. Of course the romantic poets loved the country too.

People who prefer mountainous regions gravitate towards the northern areas. The Italian Alps offer excellent skiing and in summer the lakes bask in cool mountain air.

Travellers who like to be warm may drift to the south of the country. The Adriatic Sea has warm waters and the heel and foot of the land touch the Mediterranean Sea. The Italian Riviera borders France and a stretch of the Liguria coastline has palm trees, casinos and fascinating drives along narrow roads that hug the sea.

Great holiday locations to stay in Italy may be found in many places. Whether it is a room in a boarding house, a hired villa or a charming hotel one can be assured that the atmosphere will be a relaxing mix of ancient and new.
