A Grand Turk Taxi To Get Around On The Island

By Liliana Mills

Vacations take a great deal of careful planning. Many details go into a successful and enjoyable trip. One important decision to be made is how you will get around once your destination has been reached. When travelling to Turks and Caicos, a Grand Turk taxi is a convenient way to get to all your points of interest.

Grand Turk Island is located in the Turks and Caicos. It is the largest of the Turks islands and has the second largest population with nearly four thousand inhabitants. It is serviced by the JAGS McCartney International Airport which welcomes flights from various airports throughout the world. A luxury cruise ship center is also located there. It features a 3000 foot pier and also has a welcome center. It also features a recreation center for year round enjoyment.

One of the island's claims to fame is being the landing spot of John Glenn's Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft. A replica is displayed to help visitors get a taste of history. Another is that it is where Christopher Columbus made landfall for the first time in 1492 when he sailed to discover the New World.

Many come to this location for its spectacular diving. One thing that makes it great is that any level diver, from the novice who has never snorkeled to the elite, can have a great experience. A protected coral reef that drops 8000 feet is close to the shore and a beautiful underwater sight to see. Whale watchers can stay on the shore and watch the humpbacks pass.

The administrative capital is Cockburn Town. It is also the cultural and historical epicenter of all the islands. The streets of Cockburn Town are lined with landmarks. Bermudan architecture is present and visible in the buildings. There are many libraries, churches, homes, offices and even the residence of the governor.

History abounds on the island. The National Museum is a must see for these folks. There they can learn about such events as the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest shipwreck of its type known in the Western Hemisphere. This wreck dates back to 1505. Buffs can also plan to visit the Lighthouse as well as Fire hill and Hawks Nest Anchorage. There is much to enjoy and much to learn.

Gibbs Cay is arguably the most popular excursion site. It is an uninhabited island of white beaches and great diving. Colorful fish swim in the reef welcoming snorkelers and divers to join them. The local delicacy is conch. Visitors can learn how to clean one and then they can enjoy the fruits of their labors. A signature activity is swimming with stingrays. Crew members help with this activity. Some choose to lay back and relax in the sun and enjoy a complimentary drink.

A Grand Turk taxi is a way to make great use of your vacation time. Tourist spots, shopping and dining are all just a short ride away from any hotel or resort. The drivers are like ambassadors that are happy to tell some tales of their home or point you in the right direction of just the right activity or spot for your party to eat.
