Buy Travel Insurance

By Anita Hanzten

When planning a trip, nobody wants to think about what might go wrong, but the reality is that things can go wrong even with the most meticulously prepared trips. Flights can get cancelled; luggage can get lost; and accidents happen.

It is a good idea to think about buying a travel insurance policy, so if something does come up, your vacation will not be totally ruined. You can protect your family and your finances with this quick and inexpensive purchase, and not have any worries while you travel.

What is Travel Insurance?

While you are away from home on a trip, whether for business or recreation, this insurance covers medical expenses and financial losses that could arise. It can be can be tailored to your specific needs and purchased for trips of any length. Package plans or travel medical plans are the two ways this type of insurance is typically sold.

A good plan will provide, at a minimum, several benefits:

Should you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason prior to departure, Trip Cancellation will reimburse your non-refundable travel arrangements. Depending on the policy, the reason can be important. It is important to select the right policy.

If you have to interrupt or return home early from your trip for a covered reason, Trip Interruption will reimburse your unused travel arrangements.

If you need emergency transportation for a serious illness or injury that occurs while you are traveling, Medical Expense/Emergency Assistance will cover the medical expenses.

If you are unexpectedly delayed due to flight delays or cancellations or for other similar covered reasons, Travel Delay Benefits cover your out-of-pocket expenses for meals and accommodations. You must usually have a delay upwards of 6 or 8 hours, or some other specific length of time.

When a flight connection is missed due to reasons such as bad weather or mechanical issues, Missed Connection covers additional expenses that you must pay to make alternate travel arrangements.

Cover loss or damage to your baggage or personal items or the cost of buying toiletries or personal articles if your baggage is delayed for a specified amount of time, such as 8 or 12 hours or more, with Baggage and Baggage Delay coverage.

There are many reasons why you should buy travel insurance when booking your holiday. If you wait, time sensitive provisions will limit coverage of most policies. If you have Pre-Existing medical conditions that have been treated or even that have been recommended to be treated 60 - 180 days prior to the purchase of the policy, this may limit your coverage.

And be sure to check the small print. Have you heard this before and did not pay attention? It is very important to read everything before you pay for the policy, as far as getting that essential travel insurance is concerned. Knowing what you are covered for will ensure you avoid a situation where you have an accident on vacation and suddenly find yourself hugely out-of-pocket with no hope of recovering the expenses incurred.
