Peruvian history is shrouded in the mists of time and documented as far back as 12 000 BC. Originally a civilization of hunters and gatherers who roamed the countryside various groups took to farming crops around 4000 BC. This is an area which is rich in history and home to various man made and natural famous wonders of the world. Therefore the question of Why visit Peru? is not difficult to answer in the affirmative for most people.

With this wealth of cultural diversity from local Chavin, Inca and Paracas and the Spanish influence introduced in the 16th Century by the Conquistadors the country offers something for each and every taste and age. Its history is marked with periods of peace and times of great upheaval and bloodshed. It is colorful and filled with an abundance of ancient and modern precious metal artifacts, beautiful woven mats and garments and delightful taste tingling cuisine.

Mother Nature has blessed this country with what are considered as the most magnificent natural wonders. The Amazon Basin has an abundance of rare and threatened species and has been classified as one of the ten endangered biodiversity spots. The Peruvian Andes with its famous peaks are majestic and offer amazing climbs for amateurs and professionals alike. Its coastal region bordering on the Pacific Ocean has large tracts of semi desert and is dotted with cities. Five other South American countries share common borders with Peru.

In ancient and modern outdoor bazaars tourists can taste amazing exotic fruits and veggies, view beautiful arts and crafts and enjoy local cuisine. Renowned for their weaving expertise the clothing and wall hangings are made according to ancient intricate patterns and make excellent gifts or items for personal use.

Largely a religious country where Catholicism reigns there is however evidence of other Christian beliefs. Some ancient beliefs have been absorbed into certain Catholic rituals. Officially Spanish is the main language but many dialects have survived and are mostly spoken in rural areas. English is spoken in tourist areas.

Sites to visit are the Sacred Valley and Manchu Picchu the ancient city in the mountains. A railroad offers easy access and organized tour groups regularly depart to all these sites. By joining backpacking or official hiking groups tourists have the opportunity of exploring these amazing historical sites at their leisure.

Ancient towns and tiny villages allow tourists to experience a lifestyle long forgotten. The many cultures that make up this interesting country can be found in these heritage areas. If one has the time it is recommended that they mingle with the local inhabitants to learn more of their culture and history.

Easy to jet in or to arrive by cruise ship at highly affordable prices this is a popular vacation spot for people from around the globe. Overall it is a good value for money tourist destination for young and old catering to cash strapped budgets and those with unlimited funds with equal flair.
