General Introduction To ATV Lift Kits

By Dolores Harrison

Anyone who has just acquired all-terrain vehicles will notice that most owners having them add ATV lift kits. Several benefits can be expected with these attachments. It is important to know what these benefits are. Since one has already made a purchase of these vehicles, one will seek to maximize his riding experience with necessary additions. The benefits of these additions should be known much better to help in making decisions.

There are a variety of purposes these vehicles can be used for. They could be used for snow plowing, hunting, races, or just riding for recreation. Not all vehicles can handle rough terrains. ATVs were designed for such. Those who have adventurous spirits will surely enjoy them.

ATV enthusiasts generally want them bigger. The bigger they are, the more powerful the look, and the more they are capable of handling rough terrains. Larger models offer greater maneuverability to drivers. Appearances are just as important. Given this, owners acquire different accessories to enhance their vehicles.

The purpose of these kits are to achieve higher elevated clearances and make attachment of significantly larger tires possible. Having larger tires attached is responsible for their ability to function well despite tough environmental conditions. Normal vehicles could not handle such conditions. There are different models and designs of ATVs. Some are four-wheel drive while some are two-wheel drive, but all of them have kits that match them.

Installation may not be done in a jiffy as it will take several hours. However, this does not mean that attaching them is very complicated. In fact, needed tools for attaching them are to be found easily. These are just the ordinary tools that most people have at their garages. When they are added, the distance between tire and fender is significantly increased. This helps them with their performance which is way better than normal lifting suspensions.

A typical kit is designed so that the travel of suspension of the vehicle is considerably increased. This is done by installing blocks amidst its shocks, machine swing arm, and suspension. Having this requires nothing else but just adding it though some advanced versions require extension of break lines, wheel spacers, and drive chains before completing installation. More radical ones will require drive axles that are significantly longer and addition of suspension pieces.

Not all models are right for every vehicle. One must consider height being achieved. Common sense will tell that the taller the vehicles are, the more likely they are going to topple. Also consider having snorkel system to maximize the height advantage. Instead of having the point of air entry below the frame of the machine, it is raised higher than handle bar controls. This allows the engine to still operate even if it is fully submerged underwater.

Some manufacturers will usually suggest additional wheel spacers so that wheel are farther from the axles. As height is increased, the center of gravity is made more stable by having wheels set farther apart. This center of gravity is termed as roll center. Widening stance of vehicles through the use of wheel spacers will lower the roll center making them more stable and easy to maneuver. This comes handy specially on off-road environments.

ATV lift kits come in different varieties which can be purchased at many specialty shops. One must seek consultation first to make sure that model selected works well with the ATV. Through this, one can expect a smoother ride no matter how tough the terrain will be.
