In the Island of Women in Quintana Roo Mexico or also known as Isla Mujeres the travel service providers are required to submit proof of training so that they can obtain their new credentials.
The Department of Tourism in Isla Mujeres reported that May 8 was the last day to renew the travel guides' credentials to be able to legally observe and swim with the whale sharks.
Several days ahead of the beginning of the sighting season of what is deemed as "the biggest fish around the world - the Whale Shark", a process was ongoing to be able to take on the appropriate guiding documentation. Such documentation to be obtained should indicate the training hours and to meeting the work requirements through the 2012 season.
A proof of 160 hours of training classes should be submitted by the tour guides so as to obtain the credentials and become whale shark permit holders.
Furthermore, they need to present original and copy of their guiding credential, original and copy of proof of refresher courses, original and copy of a medical certificate and proof of first aid and CPR courses, and color photographs of passport sizes with white background.
The invitation to obtain such license was extended by the Tourism Board so that guides can take this opportunity as well as take all the needed documentation to renew their permits because it will be the last chance to obtain them.
The Marine Development as a Great Threat to the Whale Sharks
The whale sharks are considered to be in serious threat with the opening of a marine development.
A nautical development called "Marina Esperanto" is a tourism development project to be opened which aims to build a tourist marina of more than 1 km. long from the hotel to Coromuel in Bahia La Paz. According to a specialist such project threatens the existence of the whale shark.
The whale shark should be given primary importance and must be considered beforehand while building the marine, said the Deni Ramirez Macias who is a Mexican whale shark specialist. Moreover, he noted that when the marine is operating fully, a greater number of vessels will be in the area. Hence bringing about and increasing accidents against and threats to the largest fish of the world.
