Aquis Bella Resort and Holidays on Foot

By Steve Alexander

For a landscape with the ability to change so rapidly and drastically over just a few kilometres, there is nowhere quite like the Mediterranean. For those who love to travel on foot, the mild weather on the Greek islands makes them an ideal destination as they offer a temperate climate and long dry seasons in winter.

With its combination of sandy beaches and mountains filled with ancient paths and shepherd's trails, the Aquis Bella Resort is a great base in Crete and a walker's paradise. With its own magnificent beach, the hotel lies on the beautiful Cretan coastline. Don't miss the chance to tackle Gingilos Mountain which stands at over 2000 metres if you'd rather head to the White Mountains of Crete.

Due to its eponymous trail, Corfu is another Greek island that is great for walkers. Running the length of the island, the Corfu Trail is a 220 km long path and was established in 2001. The trail remains unaffected by mass tourism as it winds between coastline and countryside, through an untouched landscape of sand dunes, rugged gorges and dramatic cliffs. As a great base for enjoying this trail, we recommend the Aquis Pelekas Beach Hotel.

For something different to the usual rural trails, why not take a trip to Shark's Bay in Sharm el Sheikh as not all walking has to be land-bound. A "walk-in" sea is offered at this Egyptian holiday resort - a beach where you can walk out and see the vibrant coral beds due to the shallow waters. Offering a diving club, 400 metres of private beaches and an aqua sports centre, the Sea Magic Resort and Spa is a great option.

For trips to the Sinai Desert, the Sea Magic Resort and Spa makes the perfect base. The stunning mountain scenery can be enjoyed here as well as plenty more traditional walks in amongst the silence and natural beauty of the desert.
