Vacation Tilba Region Southern NSW

By Anton Maverick

While you are in the Tilba region, a trip to Gulaga Mountain with Campervan Hire Sydney is an absolute must. The city of Tilba itself is snuggled at the bottom of this mountain, on the lofts. Gulaga Mountain itself, is a spiritually significant site for the local Yuin people and the area comprising the Gulaga Countrywide Park, was officially handed back to the local Aboriginal community in 2006.

The mountain itself is the ancestral origin of the Yuin folks and the word Gulaga is a symbol for the mummy, but goes further however , in providing a foundation for the religious identity of Aboriginal males and females of the local area. Dreamtime stories continue to live in the dramatic rock formations of its volcanic landscape.

60 million years ago Gulaga mountain was an active volcano, possessing a 3 km high top. Its peak is now less than 1000 m high, but remains the dominant feature of the landscape around Tilba. Actually it is easy to see from pretty much anywhere in the neighborhood and is the key geographical feature.

Gulaga Mountain was also the scene, in the 1880s, of the discovery of gold, which was the explanation for the creation of the twin villages of Tilba, though the area was initially settled by farmers who were attracted to the area's rich volcanic soil which was eminently suitable for both farming and dairy farming. When the gold ran out, Tilba continued on as a dairy farm and is today renowned for its fantastic cheeses.

The unique and historic twin hamlets were constructed from local eucalyptus timber and the entire district was classified by the Australian Countrywide trust in 1974, as a placement of historic significance. In addition to the cheese, tourism is the main reason for the continued existence of the twin towns as their combined populations number only 100 folk.
