Time Is The Essence At Bed And Breakfast St Augustine

By Sarah Wilson

St Augustine is an old town in Florida. Bed and breakfast St Augustine style provides some excellent and interesting establishments that enable visitors to relax in an atmosphere that has been mellowed by time. Historic bed and breakfast establishments are sufficiently diverse and well preserved to offer a wide choice of interesting places.

The city is close to the Atlantic Ocean, in fact joined to it by a river inlet. About two of the town's ten square meters are under water. Although it is located close to the hurricane belt St. Augustine has not been hit badly since 1964. Excellent accommodation and interesting sites are the backbone of a tourist industry.

Way back in the sixteenth century French and Spanish explorers flirted with colonization in this part of America. These were the earliest movements of Europeans into the new world. In the centuries that followed Europeans would spread around the globe like a pink stain. Eventually the sun would never set on the British Empire.

In 1565 a Spanish explorer named the territory when he sighted land on the feast day of Augustine of Hippo. The Spanish flirted with the idea of building fortifications and extending their territories but were thwarted by French and English rivals. English visitors will probably be interested in the fact that Sir Francis Drake played a role in one of the invasions of the city.

During the Napoleonic era Spain had difficulty in retaining her colonies, being hard pressed at home. Florida was ceded to America but this did not put an end to wars and conflicts. The American civil war left its marks on the city. Native American history and the institution of slavery are written into the history of the town.

Towards the end of the nineteenth century the city entered a new era of prosperity. Henry Flagler was instrumental in developing new building programs. Many fine examples of Victorian architecture were built then and survive, many now used as bed and breakfast St Augustine establishments. Guests may enjoy fine accommodation and cuisine as they explore historic sites and inns that reflect American history.
