By John Volpe

If you are somebody who harbors a secret desire to rent car in Greece and use it to drive over to Italy for a vacation, perhaps it may come as no small surprise to you that it can actually be done. Making this work will require some knowledge of the car ferry boat routes between Greece and Italy.

If you take a car on a ferry you can sleep in your vehicle which can save you a bundle on cabin fees. Operators that offer this call it the 'Camping on Board' option. You should expect that this option will only be open to when the weather is good. Those who avail themselves to this need not worry about how to freshen up as ferry permits them to use the ship's restrooms and showers.

If you have time to spare, a jaunt from Corfu to Venice on one of those super-fast boats while seated in your car can make for an exciting adventure and wonderful conversation starter if you are up to it. The trip one-way can take as much 21 hours so you will need to plan accordingly. Food and drink are available on-board, but you are welcome to bring your own.

The ferry craft that sail between Italy and Greece are totally modern and in no way resemble the shabby wooden boats carrying exiles as seen in those old movies. Modern vessels are built for comfort and come with sophisticated technical equipment and conveniences such as emergency medical equipment, wireless Internet, currency exchange kiosks, fully-equipped and staffed business meeting rooms, cinemas, eateries, and cocktail lounges.

Upon landing in Venice you will be eager to take in the many splendid vistas and fabled sites of this historic city. You will be pleased that you chose to visit by automobile when you discover that you will have sufficient time to see not only all of Venice, but Milan, Lake Como, and Cinque Terre as well.

Because Venice is situated within a shallow lagoon motorists need to transfer to the car ferry at Tronchetto - a man-made island in the Venetian Lagoon near the westernmost tip of Venice island. Tronchetto is basically a car park for visitors to the city who cannot bring in their cars.

Motorists need to use the Ponte della Liberta Bridge to take them from Venice to the mainland. If you plan on staying near Venice for the duration of your trip, you are in for a treat. You will want to start by seeing Venezia St. Lucia first. Just park at Tronchetto, and get on the City People Mover. If you are up to it, take a ride in a vaporetto, one of those speedy motor taxis boats.

If you want to squeeze two European vacation getaways into one, then a Greece-to-Italy automobile trip might just be for you. It is a wonderful way to experience the Mediterranean lifestyle without having to fly there. Just rent car in Greece and buy yourself a ticket on the car ferry. It will whisk you away on a super romantic voyage between two extraordinary destinations.
