A Cursory Overview Of Louvre Museum

By Pierre Fontaine

Paris' oldest, largest and most famous museum is the Louvre. People from all fields of life will possibly stare with amazement to its classic and luxurious building.

The Louvre officially became a museum in 1973 but it was initially established as a military fortress in the 13th century and served as a home for royalties in the 16th century.

Louvre museum includes four wings, with each having a particular use. The center of the museum is called Carosel de Louvre. It is also the area where the American architect Im Pei's glass pyramid stands. It was built in the 1990s and has become one of the spots where a large number of tourists are concentrated.

The Dennon wing of the Louvre Museum Paris is a 500 meter long hall with rooms branching off it that runs parallel to the river Seine.

Richelieu section is alongside Rue de Rivoli. The end of the building on the other hand can be found as you move towards the east of the building. The four wings of Louvre features art pieces of different periods or geographic origins.

The Louvre is the home of the oldest and greatest works of art in history. Probably the most visited among the works at Louvre is Mona Lisa by Da Vinci. But bear in mind that Louvre has more to offer than this single artwork.

The artworks displayed in the Louvre museum Paris have been collected by successive French Governments over the past 500 years. Hence the Louvre Museum Paris has such a rich and extensive collection of artworks taken from other countries and cultures. Arguably the best Islamic, Greek and Assyrian art collections in the world are held in the Louvre Museum Paris.

One thing to remember is that one day will never suffice to see everything inside Louvre. A maximum of one week should be allotted to see everything. Thus, it would still be desirable to check in on a hotel near the museum.
