Bicycle Safety Quick Tips

By Dana Cain

It may be easy to ride a bike but not so to remember the tenets of bicycle safety. People ride bikes for many reasons including recreation and relaxation, for exercise, muscle toning, and weight loss, charity bike-a-thons, wine tours, bicycle races and many more!

Regardless of the myriad reasons one can ride a bike, you would want to be sure you have substantial knowledge of proper bicycle safety! The following paragraphs will discuss bicycle safety, as well as how it applies to different aspects of bicycle riding.

A person who wears a protective helmet to guard their head understands it is very important when you are riding a bike. It is very easy to injure your head or brain if you are involved in a bicycle accident, fall off of your bike, or lose your balance while riding. By wearing a protective helmet, you are taking steps in the right direction to guard your head and brain from possible injury due to accident. If we are to be asked, there is no specific time to use a protective helmet, but ideally these would be absolutely mandatory for children or novice bikers when they ride their bicycles for the first few times, for bike races, mountain biking and bike-a-thons.

The fact that you are protected can only make you more confident when riding your bike, thus adding to the enjoyment from such an activity.

In addition to wearing a protective helmet, there are instances when you may also want to wear protective pads when riding a bicycle. This is especially true when children are riding a bike for the first time and are especially prone to clumsy spills. Also, knee and elbow pads would be necessary for novice bike riders because spills can also lead to scrapes on the knee and elbow area. However, even experienced bikers may want to use this protective gear, as bicycle safety encompasses individuals of all biking skill levels.

During bike races it can be important to not only wear a protective helmet, but to also wear protective padding available for adult cyclists. It is commonplace in bike races for accidents to occur and injuries to endanger cyclists in the competition. One can significantly reduce the chances of serious, debilitating injuries by wearing the right protective elbow and knee pads in competition.

Bicycle safety is a must to practice, no matter if you are biking for leisurely purposes, for exercise, charity or if you regularly enter bike races. It is very easy to have an accident on a bicycle, and wearing the proper safety gear can help protect you in case of an accident. It would behoove you to wear all of the protective and safety gear mentioned above whenever you ride a bicycle for whatever purpose.
