United Thumped At Home By Majestic City

By Ben Williams

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his shock and embarrassment at watching his side slump to a humiliating 6-1 defeat at the hands of a majestic Manchester City side. The United manager watched on helplessly as controversial striker Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko grabbed a brace each, with Sergio Aguero and the sublime David Silva also working their way onto the scoresheet after Jonny Evans was sent off for the home team.

The defeat was United's biggest home loss since 1955 and their first of any kind since April 2010. For Manchester City, it represented a statement of emphatic intent that hints the tide may be turning, both in Manchester and the context of English football as a whole. Although City's start to the domestic season has been impressive, nobody could have predicted the way the match went at Old Trafford, with James Milner and Silva running the show in a midfield dominated by blue shirts.

Roberto Mancini's tactics were spot on throughout the game, the City manager proving that his team isn't set up purely to defend for 90 minutes, and the ease with which right-back Micah Richards shrugged off the attacking threats that the household names of Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck posed will surely cause Ferguson more than a few sleepless nights over the coming weeks.

However, that said, the ever-resilient master of mind games Ferguson, has come out to state that "there will be a response" from his crushed players, but it's also worth noting the likelihood of there being a similarly timely response from the Manchester City camp, with the players receiving a massive confidence boost both from the dominant nature of the performance and the look of the Premier League table this week, which shows City sitting five points clear of their Manchester rivals in top spot.

The season is, of course, still only in its early stages, there's no doubting that, but with Mancini proving to his critics over the past few weeks through his handling of the Carlos Tevez affair that his man-management skills are far more developed than many assume, it'd be a brave (and perhaps foolish) man to rule out the Italian's team for domestic glory this season when the prizes are dished out next summer.
