A Short Guide: Outdoor Leisure And Recreation

By Bill McNeil

Despite all of the entertainment options we're modernly provided with, there's still something extremely appealing about outdoor leisure and recreation. No amount of digital building can recreate what the natural world around us can. It's unique in size, form and even smell. There are many ways to enjoy nature, even if you've never done it before.

Maybe you've never really been an outdoorsy sort of a person. Now's the time to get involved with activities that go on outside! Nothing in the entire world feels quite as good as breathing in mountain air. Hiking around lakes, even engaging in a simple picnic in the park will do wonders. Not only is it fun, it's also healthy to get out of the house and into sunshine.

If you're not an outdoorsy type of person, start simply. Drive to a nearby lake or trail and spend a few hours hiking around. Pack a picnic basket and blanket and eat on the shore, watching the water. Bring along a book that identifies different types of birds and wildflowers. Tote your camera along for picturesque moments.

Swimming in a lake is fun, too. Bring along bathing suits, beach towels and snacks. Tote some books, a camera and, in some cases, maybe a small boat or rent a kayak if there's a local rental facility. Water provides a fun experience for all ages. Most campgrounds also offer day passes for you to stay until sundown. Usually you'll find picnic benches and places to prepare hamburgers closer to the entrance.

Camping. There's nothing that's quite as immersing as going camping. For beginners, stake out your territory in a well-known campground. Choose the correct supplies. Staples include a good quality tent, warm clothes, an adequate food supply that is well-sealed, water, proper foot-ware, hats, bug spray, flashlights, matches and a whistle, in case you get separated from your group. Also, know what to do when confronted with wild animals or if you get turned around in the wilderness.

Rock climbing. This is a loved pastime of many nature enthusiasts. You may find that as a beginner, it's best to practice climbing indoor climbing structures before moving on to bigger, real rocks. Have a thorough knowledge of ropes, knots and survival techniques. It's also a sporting activity, so make sure you have lots of upper body strength. It's an amazing, soothing hobby to engage in.

Interested in something that doesn't include quite to much physical effort? Try biking. Biking around mountain trails or simply meandering around easy paths is a great way to experience the outdoors without working up a sweat. Nature is beautiful, so enjoy it!
