Penzance - The Perfect Base For Exploring West Cornwall

By Ian Motram

Land End's nearest town is Penzance, at the southern tip of Cornwall .

'Pen Sans' as Penzance was originally called in traditional Cornish dialect, meant Holy Headland because of the fact it once had a chapel near to the harbour. Penzance and its local area were renowned centuries ago as the preferred haunt for pirates. Penzance itself has a deep heritage, going back centuries and the evidence of its historical past remains evident today. Rigid planning planning regulations in many areas of the town have assisted to preserve a great deal of its original character.

Penzance was given its initial Royal Charter in 1512 and over many centuries the area has developed into a wonderfully artistic and vivacious area with a wonderful atmosphere. Originally a significant fishing town with the fishing industry as its key source of wealth, it now caters for tourism and gains a stable increase in numbers each year due to its huge popularity with a diverse range of visitors.

It is simple to reach Penzance by road, despite it being tucked away in the far nook of the UK. Coach and train connections to the town are also straightforward.

Penzance is a great base for exploring Cornwall. In comparison to the rest of Britain, Penzance has a fairly warm climate all year thanks to the Atlantic Gulf Steam.

In this part of the country in the Victorian era vast amounts of exotic, rare and beautiful trees and plants were introduced. With its stunning range of sub-tropical plants and trees, the entire area has a wonderfully romantic, Mediterranean atmosphere.

The Golowan Festival is held in June and is a very busy time for Penzance. Marking the arrival of Midsummer, this Festival is an ancient tradition. This festival lasts for ten days and treats visitors to a combination of colourful parades, live music, entertainment and art. Other entertainment includes dramatic fires, firework displays and a fair with traditional rides. Through the streets of Penzance you will see a gorgeous array of bright banners and fresh flowers.

On the last Monday of August the Newlyn Fish Festival is held in the area. This is a very important festival for Newlyn ,as it celebrates the regions fishing heritage. During the festival the harbour is filled with an array of boats, at the market you can see all of the typical locally caught fish. There are plenty of stalls and entertainment.

Penzance caters extremely well for individuals and families who will find unending choices of eating and shopping facilities. A selection of ancient monuments survive in the surrounding area, and offer fantastic opportunities for a day trip.

There are a large number of art studio's and galleries in the area due to Penzance having the biggest concentration of artists in the UK besides London. You can view work by famous artist Stanhope Forbes at the art gallery situated at Penlee Park. There are many great privately owned galleries to see and the nearby town of St Ives also has world-class galleries such as the Tate, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and the Leach Pottery.
