How to Plan the Perfect Park City Summer Vacation

By Susan Mayloch

When people think of Park City, winter sports and the "Greatest Snow on Earth" are usually the first things that come to mind. What most don't realize is that Park City has as much to do in the summer as in the winter, if not more. The hard part is choosing which activities to do if you have a limited amount of time.

Adrenaline inducing sports are easy to come by in Park City. Mountain biking is one of the most popular summer sports, which is a small wonder considering the quantity and quality of trails throughout Park City. On any given day, visitors and locals alike can be found on rides ranging from mellow beginner trails to bone jarring single tracks at Deer Valley. River rafting, rock climbing, and hiking at the resorts are just a few other ways to get out and enjoy Park City's scenery.

While sports are a big lure for many vacationers, there are also numerous activities to keep families entertained. Park City Mountain Resort offers pulse-racing rides like the zip line, alpine coaster, and alpine slide for kids and adults alike. Mini-golf, a climbing wall, and a human maze are also great alternatives right at the base of the mountain.

Utah Olympic Park can give aspiring Olympians and adventure seekers the opportunity to experience the rush of racing down the bobsled track. An expert will guide the sled down the track at speeds up to 70 miles per hour-definitely not for the faint of heart! If the bobsled isn't enough, there is also a freestyle aerial splash pool at the park, where Olympians practice, as well as putting on public shows. There are even aerial camps available for those who want more of a hands on experience.

There are plenty of other happenings unique to Park City, such as summer festivals. The Park City Jazz Festival, hosted by Deer Valley, is a great way to enjoy different types of music in a beautiful mountain setting. The Park City Food and Wine Festival is another festival that where the scenery only adds to the experience.

Restaurants in Park City supply more dining options than most people can get to in numerous trips. There are fine dining options that provide course after course of locally influenced meals, as well as quick, inexpensive meals that can be grabbed en route to an outdoor concert. The venue can be half the experience with some restaurants providing people watching on Main Street, and others among the lush mountain scenery of Deer Valley.

For vacationers that prefer a different type of exercise, the shopping in Park City can take up an entire visit. There are plenty of kitschy souvenir shops, high end boutiques, and everything in between to make window shopping on Main Street a full time diversion. Being a mountain town, Park City does also offer its fair share of shops with gear for any and all mountain activities.

A local saying in Park City is "Come for the winter, stay for the summer." People can become overwhelmed with all that the town has in store for them. Between the activities and the idyllic mountain weather, it can be easy to understand why the hardest part about Park City is leaving.
